To Inspire

Genealogy is a great hobby. Always something new to find whether it be a new name, story or event in history. I hope this inspires you a little bit to find out something new about your family and pass it on so the history doesn't get lost. If your new to my blog, please see the tab "Archive Index" - these are all my past articles. Enjoy!

Bletsoe Castle and Carmarthen Castle

Bletsoe Castle, Bedfordshire, England built about 1327.

There was a prior manor on the property, then when more land was inherited there was more done to the property to turn it into more of a castle for royalty.

It had a moat of about 59 ft wide and about 7-8 feet deep.   Part of the moat was also destroyed over time.  Most of the site  has been destroyed.  Today it is a national important archaeological site, so there can no longer be changes made to the property.

Margaret of Anjou Countess Beaufort (Margaret is the mother of Henry VII) was born here and married  Edmund Tudor  Earl of Richmond  in 1455.

Edmund Tudor later died at Carmarthen Castle, Carmarthenshire, Wales.

Carmarthen is believed to be the oldest town in Wales,
where a fort was built by the Romans in 75AD.

Carmarthen castle has been used as a governmental center for hundreds of years.  During medieval times, it was built in 1094 near the old fort from the Romans.  The town was destroyed in about 1215 but was later rebuilt.  Today the castle surrounds the County Hall  and many aspects of the castle still exist and can be seen.
