To Inspire

Genealogy is a great hobby. Always something new to find whether it be a new name, story or event in history. I hope this inspires you a little bit to find out something new about your family and pass it on so the history doesn't get lost. If your new to my blog, please see the tab "Archive Index" - these are all my past articles. Enjoy!

Tips Thursday - Civil War Documentation

Many people may not have ever requested Military Files because they don't know how, or you don't know what you'll get.  You really don't know how much you will get in the file, but I've never been disappointed.  It does cost depending what you order.  I wanted to give you an example of what one file may look like. This is a pretty good file example that I have received. You normally may get just a few pages, but most that I have ever requested are similar to this one.  They will tell you when the solider joined, where they have been, and pension information too.  There are different files you can order; military files and pension files. I usually will request both.  The Pension files usually give you more personal information on family member which is very beneficial. The Military files are great to figure out where that person fought, and were and what happened to them. I've even recieved some of the enlistment physical that was performed, which is great because it gives me a detail of what they looked like - hair, eyes and skin color and other details.  Find it very interesting.

These are the files of Josiah Huggins. He was my 3rd Great Grandfather on my Appleby side.  He was born in 1837.  Where he was born is confusing and I haven't verified it yet.  I have documents that say Indiana and others say Pennsylvania.  He died in 1918 in Delhi, Iowa.  He was married to Margery Annie Poor.  They had 10 children.

These files gave me marriage information on his enlisting papers.  There is a personal letter written by his daughter about his pensions.  It has the enlisted papers and recruiting papers as well.  I hope this helps if you decide to order a set or not. I've probably ordered about 10 different files on people and all were different.
