To Inspire

Genealogy is a great hobby. Always something new to find whether it be a new name, story or event in history. I hope this inspires you a little bit to find out something new about your family and pass it on so the history doesn't get lost. If your new to my blog, please see the tab "Archive Index" - these are all my past articles. Enjoy!

Tombstones

I highly suggest that if you have never visited an older cemetery, you must do it! It is so interesting to see what is written on tombstones. Sometimes you get lucky with full dates and names. Sometimes you even get photos on tombstones!  Military tombstones are humbling.  Children's stones are so very sad, especially when they just say baby.  There is a cemetery in Covington, MI that a lot of my family is buried in and I photographed about half the cemetery!  I have my Grandparents, my great grandparents and my great great grandparents all buried there.  Just remember when you go, bring flowers, a small shovel and a scrub brush, because you may come across some stones that have been so neglected. I try to clean them up, and be respectful.

When you travel by car - check to see if you will be driving by a cemetery that you have relatives buried in.  I do suggest that if its in a rural area, make sure someone is with you.  Especially if its in the wooded areas. Make sure you check for hunting season too!  You may laugh, but seriously, you need to be safe. Never walk a rural cemetery at night because you don't want to get hurt.

There are a lot of websites now on line that you can actually find photos of the stones, which helps a lot. I started researching my husbands family and found his grandparents stone on line.  You can also upload pictures you've taken to share. Google is great too, click the image tab and google a name, you never know what could pop up!   I'm going to post different types of stones you may come across on your travels or on line.
